When you or a loved one is undergoing surgery, the operating room (OR) nurse helps coordinate your care with the entire surgical team.
“We treat every patient like they are the only patient,” says Melanie Canoza, R.N., OR Nurse at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School.
Canoza supports and cares for patients before, during and after surgery. “This is an anxious time for patients, and we make sure to look after their every need,” she says.
A perfect fit
Canoza has been an OR nurse throughout her 15-year career. “After graduation, my first job opportunity was in a hospital operating room,” she says. “I jumped at the chance and loved it. I’ve been an OR nurse ever since.”
She enjoys the camaraderie at Mount Auburn Hospital. “There’s a great sense of community here,” she says. “We have an excellent team, dedicated to giving our patients the best care possible.”
Canoza finds her role especially rewarding. “I go home knowing I helped make a difference in someone’s life – and it happens every day,” she says.
Inside the OR
During surgery, Canoza not only takes care of her patient’s needs, she also coordinates patient care with the entire surgical team, including the surgeon, anesthesiologist and surgical technologists.
“Setting priorities and team work are important elements for maximum efficiency. The whole team is focused on making sure our patients are our top priority – that they are cared for and safe,” she says.
During the valuable window of time when the patients are awake prior to sedation, the team introduces themselves, explains their roles, and offers support and comfort. Canoza also takes this opportunity to assess and plan care according to the patients’ wants and needs.
“I make sure my patients know that I am going to be with them throughout the entire process,” she says.
Professional and personal growth
Canoza is grateful for her professional challenges. “Surgery is always evolving,” she explains. “I need to keep evolving and growing as well so I can continue to provide my patients with a safe, reliable and efficient environment.”
