Tremendous innovations are occurring in healthcare quality across the nation and around the world and Mount Auburn Hospital is at the forefront. It’s the Quality and Safety Department’s mission to ensure patients receive outstanding care in every aspect of their experience.
“A recent employee survey ranked quality as our number one priority,” says Susan Abookire, M.D., chair of Quality and Safety at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. “We are passionate about excellence in patient care.”
That passion for quality is evident in the systems and processes designed with patients in mind. Mount Auburn Hospital is among the state of Massachusetts’ leaders in healthcare quality. State-of-the-art technology, such as Computer Physician Order Entry (please link to Mr. Sophis’ article) (CPOE), allows the hospital to provide medications correctly, quickly and safely.
Dr. Abookire says CPOE is an electronic medication prescribing system, which allows physicians to order medications via computer. The computer links providers with the latest evidence-based medicine to ensure accurate and safe medication ordering, and to provide care based on leading-edge medical evidence.
Medication reconciliation and the Discharge Time-Out program at Mount Auburn Hospital were designed to engage patients in their healthcare as well as to enhance safety. Dr. Abookire recognizes that our patients are our partners. The medical staff collaborates with their patients to reach an accurate diagnosis, choose a treatment plan, and assure that care is delivered safely, even after the patient is discharged. These programs empower patients and their providers with essential knowledge for accurate continuity of care.
Dr. Abookire believes positive caregiver relationships affect and enhance patient care. Mount Auburn Hospital’s compassionate physicians and nurses have strong team relationships and this, in turn, improves the care that patients receive.
“These are some of the reasons we are top-ranking in cardiac surgery, cancer care, and maternity care. Our safe systems earned us the 2006 Excellence in Patient Safety Award from the Massachusetts Hospital Association,” says Dr. Abookire.
